Bike Riding for Dogs

Mom said she was tired of taking us to the park every weekend and missed riding her bike. So I took a look around the web showed mom all the kewl gadgets they have that allow you to hook a leash to a bike so you can bike with your dog. She bought a springer a long time ago but it didn't fit her mountain bike right, she never liked it.

She decided to be a cheapskate and build her own contraption. It worked out pretty well, she only fell once and that was getting off the bike, the klutz nearly fell on me! It's easy and cheap to build so I am posting it in case you other doggies want to go biking. Mom has a quick release seat so she just slipped a PVC T onto the seatpost. It was too big and the size smaller was too small. To solve the problem she wrapped a piece of rubber around the seat post first, then jammed on the PVC T. Now it stays where you put it, but can be rotated to the side or the front. She glued in a piece of PVC pipe and drilled a hole to clip the lead too. She bought the lead clips and rope and made that also, I told you she was cheap! When our harnesses come in she will put on a longer pipe and rotate it towards the front, letting the pipe extend out over the front wheel. This will allow us to go bikejoring and keep the bungee lead from getting tangled in the wheel.

If your mom is not a cheapskate like mine you might want to check out the walkydog,
it attaches to the seat post and sticks out to the side. For bikejoring you need to check out the BAY-o-net.

We have walky dogs. Your mom's thing looks like it pretty much works the same and probably cost a lot less!

Wow, very inventive!! And, I bet you saved a LOT of money!

If mom and dad hooked up one of those to their bikes, I guarantee they would be on the ground more than on the bike. We would be all over the place and the bike would most likely need an early burial.

Girl girl you can go! Tell you hu-mom to get you a basket to ride in, that is what the little doggies do.

Our mom and dad usually just rub our noses to get rid of the gentle leader marks. Kat doesn't have as much trouble with the marks, but I do. Sometimes mine lasts like you're saying that yours did. Is your nose strap too tight? Did your mom decide that you are so much better walking on the leash with it? Did you do somersaults to get it off?

Looks like a creative and healthy solution! I'm impressed. What a fun way to do exercise together out in the open! Great idea.

Koda!!
You gots the same name as MEEE!
We do lots of biking and scootering in winter with our local sled dog club, it sure is fun!!!! I love going fast and for some reason everyone laughs at my bunny rabbit gallop and floppy ears. Most of my friends are Siberian Huskies and I don't think I'm any different!! Make sure you run fast!!!

Nice job! You are very handy:) I was hoping you could make one small correction if you don't mind. Your link for the WalkyDog bike leash is actually going to a knockoff product website. This site has been causing a lot of confusion out there (because of the url name) and correcting the link would be very appreciate. You can direct people to find the official WalkyDog brand at this link http://www.thedogoutdoors.com/walkydog-dog-bike-leash.html. My site also has a ton of information and videos about safely biking your dog. Thanks so much and keep up the MacGyvering :)

Wow that's impressive what you've made - I've been looking at the Springer recently but have read of problems with it so I'll probably get a Walkydog, as I'm not too handy! Thanks for good info.

I'll have to look into this -- I always get the feeling when I walk with my Husky -- even when I run -- that I'm not going anywhere NEAR fast enough for her taste...

I'm going to show my hubby this - I think he could make it for me. Very clever device, I've not read about this before - I like the idea of taking my dog along for a bike ride.

I think it's nice that you've titled this Spirit Animal. Wasps really have a lot of power, they can help our crops grow better, they can help us get rid of other pests, and now science is finding so many medicinal uses derived from them. Wasp Power is right!
